Aaliyah Lewis, a graduate of both St. John’s University, Jamaica, and Bishop Ford H.S., Park Slope, recently began her professional basketball career with Forssan Alku, a professional team based in Finland. “It’s a blessing and a great opportunity,” said Lewis, a point guard from Staten Island. “I’ve been waiting to see what my next move was going to be and now the time is here. I’m excited to start this new beginning and it has been a journey to get to this stage. “
The 2012 and 2013 Tablet GCHSAA All-Star appeared in 134 games for the Red Storm, the most in program history. Her tenure included two trips to the NCAA Tournament. She finished her career with 557 assists and 944 pts. – making her the fourth player in program history to eclipse 500 assists and 900 pts.
Msgr. McClancy H.S., East Elmhurst, head varsity baseball coach, Nick Melito, was honored with the inaugural Greater New York Sandlot Athletic Alliance Excellence Award. The organization’s mission is to serve children in the New York City and Greater Metropolitan Area through baseball while promoting an attitude of professionalism and fair play. Melito played Catholic Youth Organization (CYO) baseball in the mid-1960s for St. Mary, Winfield, parish, Woodside. He later became an assistant coach at the parish.
The CYO Hall of Famer played baseball at McClancy and the New York Institute of Technology, Brookville, L.I. He took over the McClancy varsity program prior to the 2001 CHSAA season.
Daniel Berhan, a senior cross-country runner at the Cathedral Prep and Seminary, Elmhurst, finished with a time of 13:30 on Van Cortlandt Park’s 2.5 course at the Manhattan College Invitational in the Bronx. He now owns the second fastest time in school history, and has his sights set on breaking the prestigious 13-minute mark.
