The Chris Carrino Foundation for FSHD (Facioscapulohumeral Muscular Dystrophy) has embarked on a cross-country bicycling journey to help raise awareness and funds to battle FSHD. The 54-day, 4,200-mile journey, dubbed the Coast to Coast for FSHD ride, began at the Space Needle in Seattle and traversed down the West Coast. It will continue through the center of America, covering 46 cities and 15 states, wrapping up on July 19 when the riders cross the Brooklyn Bridge and celebrate their return with a huge welcome back party at Barclays Center.
A 501(c)(3) charity organization, the Chris Carrino Foundation for FSHD is dedicated to finding a treatment and a cure for FSHD. Carrino is a well-known sportscaster and the radio voice of the Brooklyn Nets who was diagnosed with FSHD after college.
Leading the group of 12 bicyclists is Frank P. Carbone, the former athletic director at St. Joseph’s College Brooklyn, Clinton Hill, and a longtime parishioner and current academy board member of St. Stanislaus Kostka, Greenpoint. Carbone developed this concept based on a trip he organized for St. Stan’s back in 1996. His team of riders and support staff is comprised of members from St. Stan’s and the St. Joseph’s College community.
Follow the ride daily by visiting C2C4FSHD.org, which features a complete profile of the trip, including videos of the team while they are on the road. For more information about the ride, including ways to sponsor and support the team, visit www.chriscarrinofoundation.org.
