Terriers Victory

The St. Francis Prep, Fresh Meadows, boys’ varsity soccer team captured this year’s CHSAA ‘AA’ city championship with a thrilling win over Fordham Prep, the Bronx. At the 7:32 mark of the third overtime period, Sean Salgueiro scored his third goal of the match to give the L’il Terriers the 4-3 victory.

Scala grew up in Williamsburg and attended Annunciation Elementary School there. He played Catholic Youth Organization sports at Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Williamsburg. From there, it was on to St. Francis Prep, Williamsburg, where he played football, basketball and baseball.

He took his baseball talents to St. John’s University, Jamaica. He later served as the New York Yankees bullpen catcher from 1978 through 1986. He is currently the head baseball coach at Adelphi University, Garden City, L.I.

The hourlong podcast — “Diving In with Dom Scala” — premiered in mid-November and focuses on all things baseball, including the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the local game. You can find the podcast on Instagram at @domscalabaseball every Wednesday at 8 p.m.


Seven athletic programs at St. Francis College, Brooklyn Heights, achieved a perfect score of 100 percent in the NCAA’s annual Graduation Success Rate. Women’s basketball, women’s bowling, women’s tennis, women’s water polo, men’s golf, men’s soccer and men’s water polo all collected perfect scores.
