Dear Editor: Rita Piro’s Up Front and Personal article, “Sisters Are as Relevant as They’ve Ever Been,” (March 25) leaves me befuddled.
I recently learned that Ursuline Sisters are losing their home. After many years at Blue Point, they are with a situational move. After living in the Blue Point community for so many years, they must now make the difficult transition of putting the elderly sisters into nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Just imagine going from your own home surrounded by your sisters to a strange place filled with unfamiliar faces.
Certainly they deserve a better fate. Without a pension and a meager stipend where will the remaining sisters go? No arrangements were made for these sisters who educated so many and gave so much to their communities. They tended to their ministries with faith and vigor.
Sadly, the Ursulines just lost a Sister named Carmel Ruth. She was 100 years old. Sister Carmel will always remain dear to my heart. She taught me in seventh grade and so many more lessons about life. My daughter also remembers her fondly as she was her math tutor.
As a Catholic community, something should be done to ensure that the remaining Ursuline Sisters be cared for in a comfortable, dignified manner.
I pray for the sisters and hope they will be seen and upheld as relevant.
