Sister Mary Mercedes Somma, R.S.M., a member of the Sisters of Mercy, Mid-Atlantic Community, for 69 years died on March 20, at Maria Regina Residence, Brentwood. She was 92.
Born Madeline Somma, she attended Sacred Heart School, Fort Greene, and Bishop McDonnell DHS. After receiving her BS in Education from Fordham University, she entered the Sisters of Mercy Novitiate in September 1950 and professed her final vows in March 1956.
A social worker at heart, for a total of 25 years, Sister Mercedes cared for the children at St. Mary’s Home in Syosset, and Angel Guardian and the Convent of Mercy in Brooklyn.
After completing post-graduate study in gerontology, she ministered for 25 years with Catholic Charities at the Bishop Boardman Apartments in Brooklyn.
Her burial took place at St. Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale.
