Sister Mary Jareth McElhinney, R.S.M., 79, a Sister of Mercy of the Americas Mid-Atlantic Community for 57 years, died Aug. 4 at Maria Regina Residence in Brentwood.
Born in Long Island City, she attended St. Michael School in Flushing, and then Bishop McDonnell D.H.S., Crown Heights, before entering the Sisters of Mercy Novitiate, Syosset, in September, 1960.
She professed her final vows in March, 1966.
She taught at St. Patrick, Kent Ave., Williamsburg, 1963-65; St. Brigid, Bushwick, 1965-66; St. Jerome, East Flatbush, 1972-85, and St. Thomas Aquinas, Flatlands, 1985-90.
She served as a cook at St. Mary’s Home, Syosset, 1966-68, the Convent of Mercy, 1968-69, and in child care at Mercy Home for Children, 1969-72.
From 1990 to 2003, she was the religious education director at St. Laurence in East New York. In 2003, she became pastoral associate at St. Elizabeth, Ozone Park.
Due to failing health, she retired in 2015 and moved to the Sisters of Mercy Convent, Whitestone.
She is survived by her sisters, Candace Garettt, Helen Wright and Anne Murry.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in the Sisters of Mercy Convent, Whitestone.
Burial was in Holy Cross Cemetery, Flatbush.
