Sister Mary Brenda Gorman

Sister Mary Brenda Gorman, R.S.M., 76, a member of the Sisters of Mercy Mid-Atlantic Community for 58 years, died Dec. 31 at Maria Regina Residence, Brentwood, L.I.

A native of St. Therese of Lisieux parish, East Flatbush, she attended the parish elementary school and Catherine McAuley H.S., East Flatbush, before entering the Sisters of Mercy Novitiate in September, 1958. She professed her final vows in April, 1964.

She earned her bachelor’s degree in secondary education and a master’s degree in library sciences from St. John’s University, Jamaica.

She taught in St. Brigid’s, Bushwick, 1961-63, and Queen of Angels, Sunnyside, 1963-77.  She was the librarian at St. John’s Prep and St. Kevin’s, Flushing, 1977-2002.

She was the associate director at the Frances Residency Program and literacy teacher at the Dorothy Bennett Mercy Center, Williamsburg, 2003-05, after which she retired.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held at the Sisters of Mercy Convent in Whitestone.

Burial was in Holy Cross Cemetery, Flatbush.
