Sister Marie Stein, R.S.M., a Sister of Mercy of the Americas Mid-Atlantic Community for 72 years, died March 14.

Born in Brooklyn, she attended St. Brigid School, Bushwick, and Mercy Juniorate H.S., Fort Greene.

She received her bachelor’s degree in education from St. John’s University, Jamaica, and a master’s in history from Seton Hall University, South Orange, N.J.

Formerly Sister Mary Colette, she entered the Sisters of Mercy Novitiate, Syosset, L.I., on Sept. 8, 1943, and professed her final vows March 23, 1949.

She taught in Holy Innocents, East Flatbush, 1946-49; St. Agatha, Sunset Park, 1949-52; St. Therese of Lisieux, East Flatbush, 1952-59; St. Patrick, Bay Shore, L.I., 1959-61; Mater Christi H.S., Astoria, 1961-73; Queen of Angels, Sunnyside, 1973-74; and Catherine McAuley H.S., Flatbush, 1974-93.

She volunteered at St. Jerome, East Flatbush, 1993-98, after which she retired to the Convent of Mercy, Fort Greene.

For the past six years, she resided at Maria Regina Residence, Brentwood.

She is survived by her sisters Rose Flint, Margaret Krien and Betty Stein.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Our Lady of Mercy Academy, Syosset, March 19. Burial followed in St. Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale, L.I.

  1. She was my history teacher at Catherine McAuley High School in the late 70’s. She was an amazing woman and Sister. She visited prisoners regularly at Rikers Island and always had us pray for the young men she counseled there. I will always remember her, my prayers to her family!
