Sister Margaret Wenzel, O.P., a Sister of St. Dominic, Amityville, for 76 years, died Feb. 27. She was 96.

Born in Brooklyn, she was raised in St. Martin of Tours parish in Bushwick. After attending the Dominican Sisters’ H.S. Juniorate, she entered the congregation on Sept. 8, 1938. She pronounced her vows on Aug. 17, 1940.

Formerly known as Sister Mary Veronice, she devoted much of her life to elementary education, especially mathematics. Her first assignment was Our Lady of Guadalupe, Bensonhurst, where she taught for 26 years, 1940-66.

She served one year at St. Clement Pope, South Ozone Park, before becoming principal of St. Patrick, Bay Ridge, 1967-70.

She served as coordinator of the convent of St. Thomas Apostle parish, Woodhaven, and was a substitute teacher at St. Patrick’s.

In 1972, she began teaching mathematics at St. Frances Cabrini, Bath Beach, where she spent 22 years before retiring there and ministering as a substitute teacher.

Poor health necessitated a move to Carlin Hall, Amityville, in 2008. She later moved into the St. Catherine of Siena Wing at the Motherhouse.

Known as Weazie among her fellow Sisters, she enjoyed regaling newer Sisters with stories of breaking some minor “rules” before Vatican II, including stopping for ice cream on her way home from school.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated March 5 in St. Albert’s Chapel, Amityville. Interment in the Sisters’ cemetery followed.
