Sister Earl Mary Moores, S.S.N.D., a member of the School Sisters of Notre Dame for 60 years, died Nov. 17 at Lourdes Health Care Center in Wilton, Conn. She was 80.
She was an educator for 58 years and for 38 years (1978-2016) she lived at St. Matthias Convent in Ridgewood, and taught history in the school.
After retiring as a full-time history teacher at St. Matthias in 2012, she continued to work for peace and justice, a theme of her teaching and ministry, by volunteering at the SSND Educational Center in Woodhaven. She also was a regular volunteer at St. Matthias Lunch Program for the Homeless.
Born in Glen Cove, L.I., as Merle Louise, she attended Landing Public School until the sixth grade. and then transferred to St. Patrick Elementary School, taught by the School Sisters of Notre Dame.
She received the bonnet on Aug. 29, 1955 and then entered the candidature in Baltimore.
