Sister Ann Heavey, R.S.M., 90, a member of the Sisters of Mercy for 67 years, died Feb. 5, at McAuley Hall Health Center in Watchung, N.J.

Born in Brooklyn, she attended St. Teresa of Avila School, Prospect Heights, and then Girls Commercial H.S. before entering the Sisters of Mercy Novitiate in Syosset, L.I., in September of 1951. She professed her final vows in March,1957.

In 1966, she received her bachelor’s degree in education, followed by her master’s in religious education, both from Fordham University. In 1982, she received a certificate in pastoral counseling.

Formerly known as Sister Mary Andre, she devoted many years to child care at Angel Guardian Home, Dyker Heights, 1954-56; St. Mary’s Home, Syosset, 1956-57; and the Convent of Mercy, Fort Greene, 1957-59.

She taught in Queen of Angels, Sunnyside, 1959-66; St. Mary’s Balboa, Panama, 1966-67 and 1968-72; St. Gerard Majella, Hollis, 1967-68; Catherine McAuley H.S., East Flatbush, 1972-73; and St. Thomas Aquinas, Flatlands, 1973-76.

She served as pastoral minister in St. Vincent Ferrer, East Flatbush, 1976-78; director of religious education at St. Mary Mother of Jesus, Bensonhurst, 1978-84; and as pastoral minister at St. Agatha, Sunset Park, 1984-2000.

She is survived by two brothers, John and James.

A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated in the Sisters of Mercy Convent, Whitestone.

Burial followed in St. Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale.
