Remembering Our Priests

Dear Editor: I would like to thank Msgr. Steven Ferrari and the staff of The Tablet for the lovely article (May 17) about my great uncle, Msgr. Eugene Feldhaus, and Bishop Rene Valero (“Remembering ‘Glory’ Years Of Two Great B’klyn Priests”).

Speaking on behalf of my uncle, I would like to thank Msgr. Ferrari, in particular, for his recent visit to see my uncle. As I’m sure he knows, it is so important for elderly priests to know that they have not been forgotten and are still in the hearts, minds and prayers of not just their family members but also those whom they have served as priest, pastor, teacher, mentor, confidant and inspiration during their tenure as a servant of God.

My uncle will celebrate 72 years as a priest on June 15. At 97 years old, his ability to remember daily activities is challenging, but boy does he remember with fondness the days when he taught at the seminary in Douglaston, the children’s concerts he attended at St. Gerard Majella Church in Hollis, and especially the Gregorian Festival that he and fellow parishioners inaugurated so many years ago when he was pastor at St. Gregory the Great Church in Bellerose! Just the mention of German Night and it brings a huge smile across his face.

I’d like to ask your readers to please keep him and all elderly priests in your prayers, as they have kept you and your families in their prayers for all these years. If you have time to stop by for a short visit, I know they would be happy to see you.

It’s not about whether they remember you; it’s about you remembering them.
