Remembering Father James Sweeney

Dear Editor: I was truly sad when I read about the March 5th passing of Father James H. Sweeney (“Brooklynite Priest, ‘Incredibly Talented Artist’, Dies at 64,” Obituaries, March 21).

I met Father Jim, as he was affectionately called, when he was a newly ordained priest at his first assignment at St. Pius V Church in Jamaica where I was a teacher in the early ‘80s.

He was such a kind, friendly and welcoming individual who had a dedicated passion for helping anyone including myself. He was about using his God-given talents whenever needed. Not only was he an outstanding artist, he was extremely fluent in Spanish and an excellent carpenter.

I remember when Father Anthony DiLorenzo was the pastor, I assisted Father Jim in creating and constructing the scenery for the parish Passion play that Father DiLorenzo staged for us. Father Jim simply rolled up his sleeves, picked up a hammer and nails and actually constructed scenery that would have impressed anyone in Hollywood or Broadway. His work was that awesome. He was such a wonderful and charming individual.

In addition, Father Jim had a truly great sense of humor. He was able to put a smile on anyone’s face. He was able to make anyone laugh. He was a very affable individual. When anyone met him for the first time, he really made you feel like he was your best friend for life. He was that nice.

I was truly blessed to have met and known Father Jim. I thank God for putting him in my life and the lives of others who met him at St. Pius and at other parishes where he was assigned. Thank you, God, for the gift of Father Jim. He was the greatest!!! May he rest in peace.
