Project Andrew in Elmhurst

By Joseph Krug

On Thursday, Jan. 7, 23 men from Cathedral Prep School and Seminary, Elmhurst, and three men from Xaverian H.S., Bay Ridge, were moved after experiencing Project Andrew, an opportunity for young men to learn about the priesthood.

The young men listened to testimonies from numerous priests, and Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio himself. After school, students assembled in the school studio, with some of their Xaverian brothers. Then they sat down for an hour of fascinating talks about the priests’ individual stories about discerning the priesthood.

The priests who shared their stories were Father Joseph Fonti, Father Sean Suckiel, Father Felix Herrera, Father James Kuroly and Father James Rodriguez.

While some knew from a very early age, some discovered their vocations only shortly before joining seminary.

What followed were two hours of grand fraternity through meal and sport. The young men ate pasta and meatballs, provided by Father Fonti, rector of Cathedral. Then some students played basketball in the gymnasium.

It was an experience that will not soon be forgotten.
