Dear Editor: With regard to President Obama’s immigration executive order, I think that there are serious moral concerns to be considered.
Some church leaders seemed to have embraced this new policy as a good thing. However, important questions must be answered. Mr. Obama has violated the U.S. Constitution by denying religious liberty to the Catholic Church by insisting that the Catholic Church pay for contraception, abortion-causing drugs and sterilization. Right now the Little Sisters of the Poor are suing the government over this.
Mr. Obama is also violating the Constitution by his executive order granting legal status to millions of illegal immigrants. Isn’t it dangerous for us to fight the president for his constitutional violation on religious liberty and yet cooperate with him for his constitutional violation on immigration? We are a nation of laws. Our Constitution protects us. When we start chopping it up, is it not possible that in the future the rights of the people and the Church will be violated again? There is a legal and just way to work out immigration reform through congress. That is how a democracy works.
