Breast cancer is the second most common cancer diagnosed in women in the U.S., other than skin cancer. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. You can work for a cure for your wife, mother, your sister, your daughter or yourself by supporting the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk. The walk is Sunday, Oct. 16 at 8 a.m. at The Nethermead in Prospect Park and at Flushing Meadows Corona Park.

The Dorothy Bennett Mercy Center is celebrating two significant milestones this month: its 10th annual fundraiser as well as its 20th anniversary year.
Founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1995, the Clinton Hill/Bedford-Stuyvesant-based center offers continually evolving programs to meet the needs of children and families in the Fort Greene and Bed-Stuy areas. These programs address concerns ranging from violence and drugs, to unemployment, discrimination, illiteracy and lack of affordable housing.   A double anniversary celebration will be held at the Belle Harbor Yacht Club in Belle Harbor on Friday, Oct. 14. All are invited to experience God’s mercy, hope, love and forgiveness at St. Luke’s Church’s Year of Mercy Parish Renewal, Oct. 17-19 in Whitestone. Amuse, an accomplished women’s vocal group will be presenting a concert of sacred music at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, Astoria, on Oct. 15 at 7:30 p.m. The program, titled “Wholly Holy,” features the works of Palestrina, Byrd, Victoria and Dufay among others. Admission is $20 at the door, but seniors get a $10 discount and children are free.
