Letters to the Editor

Part of Catholic Culture

Dear Editor: Reading Father Lauder’s column entitled “Conversations with My Favorite Authors,” I was reminded of a work by James Joyce, “A Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man.”

Although the writer left the Catholic Church, he imbues the novel with faith-filled minutiae. Its substance is that the artist must free himself from the formulas of religion and social convention and concern himself with humanity. He doesn’t suggest that one must abandon writing about religion, only that he oppose them.

Thus, the journey of the young artist is filled with Catholic nuances in all his undertakings.
