Park Slope Parade Honors St. Patrick

Under sunny skies, the Brooklyn Irish American Parade Committee conducted its 42nd annual parade along the streets of historic Park Slope last Sunday, March 19. James J. Houlihan, owner of Farrell’s Bar and Grill, led the way as Grand Marshal. His aides included Rita Lydon-Lenz; James O’Leary; Julia Ann Dineen; FDNY Lieut. Joseph Heegan Jr.; NYPD Det. Jerry Galante; Alice B. Casey; Heleana O’Driscoll-Ryan; Mary DiServio and Marc Reilly. Catholic schools, pipe and drum bands, dance academies, fraternal and community groups and local business participated in the line of march.

Auxiliary Bishop James Massa celebrated a pre-parade Mass at Holy Name of Jesus Church, which was followed by a tribute to the heroes and victims of the Sept. 11 attacks, especially those who gave their lives in the line of duty. This year’s parade was dedicated to the U.S. service men and women who sacrificed their lives for freedom in World War I.

Founded and organized in honor of America’s bicentennial in 1976, the parade honors the faith, heritage and patron saint of Ireland as well as all the sons and daughters of Erin who call America home.
