Sister Mary Joseph Lorigan, R.S.M., a member of the Sisters of Mercy, for 73 years, died Jan. 20 at Maria Regina Residence in Brentwood, L.I. She was 92.
She entered the Sisters of Mercy from Our Lady of Perpetual Help parish, South Ozone Park, in 1940, after having graduated from P.S. 159 and Bayside H.S.
She taught at St. Agatha School, Cobble Hill, 1943-47; St. Therese of Lisieux, East Flatbush, 1956-59; and served as principal and superior at St. Therese, 1961-67; Our Lady of Mercy, Hicksville, L.I., 1959-61; and St. Joseph the Worker, Patchogue, L.I., 1967-80.
As a childcare worker and accountant, she ministered at Mercy Home, 1980-2000, and then retired to St. Agatha Convent, Sunset Park.
In her retirement, she could be found ministering at the Daily Worker, a homeless shelter, at CHIPS, praying with fellow dialysis patients and visiting the lonely.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at the Sisters of Mercy Convent, Whitestone, Jan. 24 by Father Michael Perry, pastor of Our Lady of Refuge, Flatbush. Burial was in Holy Cross Cemetery, Flatbush.
