Sister Loretta Murphy, C.S.J., a Sister of St. Joseph, Brentwood, for 65 years, died May 17, in the convent of Immaculate Conception parish in Jamaica Estates.
She entered the congregation in 1951 from St. Gerard Majella parish, Hollis. She received a bachelor’s degree in business administration from St. John’s University in 1972.
Formerly known as Sister John Muriel, she taught at St. John the Evangelist, Park Slope, 1953-60, and St. Stanislaus Kostka, Maspeth, 1960-64.
Of the 65 years she spent in ministry, 52 of them were spent as a “Sister of the Neighborhood” in Immaculate Conception parish, Jamaica, 1964-2016. After teaching in the primary grades, she worked with generations of families in religious education, after-school programs, liturgical services and many parish events.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Immaculate Conception Church on May 20. She was interred in Calvary Cemetery, Brentwood.
She taught me when I was at St. John the Evangelist – a kind teacher. I will always remember her kind ways. May she be richly blessed.
