Sister Margaret Sagona, R.S.M., 82, a Sister of Mercy of the Americas Mid-Atlantic Community for 63 years, died April 9 at Mercy Center, Dallas, Pa.
Born in Brooklyn, she attended Long Beach Elementary School, Long Beach, L.I., and Our Lady of Mercy Academy, Syosset, L.I.
She entered the Sisters of Mercy on Feb. 2, 1951 and professed her final vows on Sept. 5, 1956.
Formerly known as Sister Mary Inez, she taught at St. Therese of Lisieux School, East Flatbush, 1953-55; St. Jerome, Flatbush, 1955-59; St. Thomas Aquinas, Flatlands, 1959-63; St. Mary, Roslyn, L.I., 1963-65; St. Pius X, Plainview, L.I., 1965-67; Mercy H.S., Riverhead, L.I., 1967-70; Catherine McAuley H.S., Flatbush, 1970-80; and Holy Trinity H.S., Hicksville, L.I., 1980-83.
A talented seamstress, she also served as a counselor and research advisor at South Oaks Institute, Amityville, L.I., and as a computer operator for the Sisters of St. Dominic, Amityville.
She is survived by her sister, Sister Dorothy Sagona, R.S.M.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at the Sisters of Mercy Convent, Whitestone. Burial followed in Holy Cross Cemetery, Flatbush.
She was my teacher in fifth grade. She was very special. I went to see her when she went to St. Thomas Aquinas.
