Obituary – Deacon John P. Coffey

Deacon Coffey

A Mass of Christian Burial for retired Deacon John P. Coffey was celebrated April 27 at Holy Family Church, Park Slope. He died April 21 at his private residence. He was 81.

Retired from active ministry since 2009, Deacon Coffey was ordained by Bishop Francis J. Mugavero on Dec. 3, 1977. He served at Christ the King parish, Springfield Gardens, 1977-2004, and at St. Teresa of Avila, Crown Heights, 2004-09.

From 1963 to 1991, he worked as an investigator of fraud for American Express. He was a graduate of Cathedral College, Brooklyn, and received a masters in Catholic Theology and Pastoral Ministry as well as an advanced diploma in catechetics and religious education, both from St. John’s University, Jamaica.

In addition to his parish duties, he also was an administrator in the School of Religion at the diocesan Office of Catholic Education.

Auxiliary Bishop Octavio Cisneros was the main celebrant of the funeral Mass. Father Thomas Ahern preached the homily.

He is survived by his wife, Annemarie and their eight children.

Burial was in Holy Cross Cemetery, Flatbush.
