Obituary: Sister Mary Slaymaker, C.S.J.

Sister Mary Slaymaker, C.S.J., a Sister of St. Joseph, Brentwood, L.I., for 73 years, died July 17 in Maria Regina Residence in Brentwood.

She entered the congregation in 1944 from Holy Name parish, Park Slope. After earning a bachelor’s degree in English from Manhattan College, she received a master’s in library science from St. John’s University in 1960; certification in administration from Brooklyn College and a master’s in theology/liturgy from Immaculate Conception Seminary.

She taught at St. James, Downtown Brooklyn, 1945-46; St. John the Evangelist, Park Slope, 1946-49; St. Malachy, East New York, 1949-55; St. Camillus, Rockaway Beach, 1955-56; and Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Sunset Park, 1956-59.

On the secondary level, she taught at St. Angela Hall Academy H.S., Clinton Hill, 1959-64; Bishop McDonnell H.S. Annex, Flushing, 1964-65; St. Pascal Baylon H.S., St. Albans, 1965-67; and Fontbonne Hall Academy, Bay Ridge, 1967-70.

She was principal of  St. Agnes (DeGraw St.) in Boerum Hill, 1970-77; and St. Bernard, Levittown, L.I., 1977-81.

She also served at Immaculate Conception, Jamaica, 1981-89; Sacred Heart Academy H.S., Hempstead, L.I., 1989-92; Sacred Heart parish, Bayside, 1992-95; and Bishop Kearney H.S., Bensonhurst, 1995-2011.

In 2011, she retired to St. Joseph Convent, Brentwood, and transferred to Maria Regina Residence in 2016.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held July 21. Interment followed in Calvary Cemetery, Brentwood.
