Sister Dolores

Sister Dolores Marie Foster, C.S.J., formerly Sister Raymond Miriam, a Sister of St. Joseph, Brentwood, for 54 years, died March 8.
She entered the congregation from St. Mary Star of the Sea, Far Rockaway. After graduation from Brentwood College, she taught primary children in St. Patrick, Long Island City, 1961-65; St. Bernard, Levittown, 1965-67; St. Philip Neri, Northport, 1967-68; St. Joachim, Cedarhurst, 1968-69; Blessed Sacrament, North Valley Stream, 1970-73; Little People’s Day Care Center, Medford, 1974-75; St. Francis de Sales, Patchogue, 1975-77; and St. Christopher, Baldwin, 1977-07. She then spent time at Stella Maris Convent, Far Rockaway, doing congregational service.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held in Sacred Heart Chapel, Brentwood, March 12.
Interment followed in Calvary Cemetery, Brentwood.

Sister Eileen

Sister Eileen Wahl, C.S.J., formerly Sister James Matthew, a Sister of St. Joseph, Brentwood, for 70 years, died March 6 in Maria Regina Residence, Brentwood.
She entered the Brooklyn congregation from St. Martin of Tours parish, Bushwick. Her training in religion and special education was preparation for her work with primary schoolchildren in her early years and her later ministry to people with disabilities.
Her ministries included: Immaculate Heart of Mary, Kensington, 1944-45; Holy Child Jesus, Richmond Hill, 1945-50; St. Philip Neri, Northport, 1950-54; St. Teresa of Avila, South Ozone Park, 1954-58; St. Anthony of Padua, East Northport, 1958-68; St. Bernard, Levittown, 1968-80; St. Frances de Chantal, Wantagh, 1980-89; Neumann Residence, Manhasset, staff worker, 1989-98; and as a direct care counselor for the Association for the Help of Retarded Children (AHRC), Brookville, 1998-99.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held in Maria Regina Chapel, Brentwood, March 9.
Interment followed at Calvary Cemetery, Brentwood.

Sister Mary Philippa O’Reilly, R.S.M., a Sister of Mercy of the Americas Mid-Atlantic Community for 75 years, died March 13. She was 93.
Raised in St. Agatha parish, Sunset Park, she attended elementary school there and graduated from Mercy Juniorate H.S.  A graduate of Fordham University, she earned a master’s degree from Hofstra University.
She entered the novitiate in Syosset on Feb. 2, 1937 and professed her final vows in 1942.
She served as a teacher at St. Patrick’s, Kent. Ave., Williamsburg, 1939-40; Sacred Heart, Adelphi St., Fort Greene, 1940-46; St. Thomas Aquinas, Flatlands, 1946-53; St. Jerome, Flatbush, 1953-59; Catherine McAuley H.S., Flatbush, 1960; and Mercy H.S., Riverhead, 1960-65.
In 1965, she became principal of Maria Regina School, Seaford, L.I., 1965-73. For the next three decades, she served as teacher and finally as a volunteer in Mercy McGann H.S., Riverhead, 1973-2004.
She had recently retired to the Sisters of Mercy Convent, Whitestone.
She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and Raymond Manning.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Sisters of Mercy Convent, Whitestone, on March 19.
Interment followed in St. Charles Cemetery, Farmingdale.

Msgr. Edmond J. Trench, 81, a retired priest of the Rockville Centre Diocese for 65 years, died March 17.
He attended Immaculate Conception Seminary, Huntington, and was ordained June 1, 1957 at St. James Pro-Cathedral, Downtown Brooklyn.
His last assignment was as pastor of Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary, Southhamption, L.I., where he serevd from 1988 to 2000.
In retirment, he served as associate vocations director for Rockville Centre.

  1. Sister Dolores Marie Foster was the best teacher I ever had. She had a warm and encouraging spirit. I’m almost forty and still think of her often. I’m eternally grateful to her for the invaluable lessons she’s taught me. You’ll forever hold a special place in my heart St. Foster.
