Sister Jacqueline Dee Walsh, R.S.M., a pastoral associate at St. Edward the Confessor parish, Syosset, L.I., died July 9 after being struck by a hit-and-run driver while on a retreat at Mercy Villa in Water Mill, L.I. She was 59 years old.

Sister Jackie, as she was known, was born in the Bronx, but her family moved to Long Island while she was still young. She attended the Pine Avenue School, Bethpage, L.I., and graduated high school from Our Lady of Mercy Academy, Syosset, and Springfield College, Springfield, Mass.  She then earned a master’s degree in theology from St. John’s University, Jamaica.

She entered the Brooklyn Sisters of Mercy in 1981 in Our Lady of Mercy parish, Hicksville, L.I. For the next two years, she served as recreational supervisor for the Nassau County Department of Recreation and Parks.

From 1983 to 1992, she served as the director of youth ministry at Our Lady of Mercy parish. She then taught theology at Our Lady of Mercy Academy from 1994 to 1997. She was also the school’s campus minister until 2003.

Beginning in September 2003, she spent the last nine years as pastoral associate at St. Edward the Confessor. While there, she lived in the Mercy First convent, Syosset.

She is predeceased by her mother Lettie and her father Jack, a retired N.Y.C. police officer.

A Mass of Christian burial took place July 14 at St. Edward the Confessor Church.  Interment was at Holy Rood Cemetery, Westbury, L.I.
