Dear Editor: I am a 70-year-old cover-to-cover reader of The Tablet, and have been so since well before my teens. I have never written a letter of complaint until today, as I do so with regard to the Letter to the Editor titled, “News That’s Fit to Print” (April 22).
I object not to the letter itself, but to the fact that The Tablet failed to footnote nor did it require the writer, Tom Phillips, to footnote the several more-than-obscure references in the letter.
As a reader of abject curiosity, I believe that The Tablet did a great disservice to its readers by not explaining, among other references, “Matthews and Cuba” or “William Buckley Jr. and a long ago Police Communion Breakfast.”
Intriguing references, and I was drawn to know more. The Tablet left us with nothing and I had to resort to Google for information, but not even satisfactorily so.
I’m a senior well familiar with the Internet, but surely many other “Boomers” are not, are still suffering from the same curiosity, and would be supremely grateful if you were to explain, either in print or online, more about Mr. Phillips’ references.
Keep up your good work, but please do not dangle intriguing and tantalizing references before your dedicated readers without some clarification.
While I’m writing, I’d like to suggest that The Tablet devote a full page, as it once did many, many years ago, to a dozen or so brief “snippets” of news from around the country and around the world. We Brooklynites and Queensians are sadly ignorant of Church life and events elsewhere on the planet. Just a suggestion, but realize that The Tablet could well be the only source of information about the contemporary Universal Church for many beyond the boroughs.
