On Saturday Nov. 9, the Msgr. McClancy M.H.S., East Elmhurst, varsity boys’ soccer team captured the N.Y.C. “A” division championship by defeating John F. Kennedy Catholic H.S., Somers, N.Y., 2-1 at Fordham University, the Bronx.
Both teams won their respective divisions, and it was a highly-anticipated matchup between the two No. 1 seeded teams.
The game was intense throughout, and after the first half, the Crusaders found themselves down 1-0.
The second half featured back-and-forth action, with both teams playing well. The score remained 1-0 late into the second half.
With 10 minutes left to play, the Crusaders evened the score when Michael Ferrara scored on a header off a corner kick from Alex Ulic.
Less than two minutes later, the Crusaders took the lead for good on a well-executed goal by Joey Mifsud.
The Crusaders held on to win 2-1 and have now won three consecutive city championships and four out of the last five.
