Local Events Marking 100th Anniversary of the Fatima Apparitions

In honor of the 100th anniversary of the Marian apparitions in Fatima, Portugal, the following observances are being held in Brooklyn and Queens:

At Visitation Monastery, Bay Ridge, pilgrims are welcome on May 13 to attend 1 p.m. Mass, celebrated by Father Stephen Saffron in Sacred Heart Chapel. A rosary procession to the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima on the monastery grounds and refreshments will follow.

Sandra Sergio will give a two-hour presentation, Fatima: The Only Way to World Peace, at the Shrine Church of St. Bernadette, Dyker Heights, on May 13, from 1 to 3 p.m. Call 718-837-3400.

Join Incarnation Church, Queens Village, for a one-day journey, May 13, to the Shrine of Our Lady of the Island, Manorville, L.I., to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Our Lady’s first apparition at Fatima. Cost: $45. For reservations, call 718-465-8534. (Registration closed)

The Church of the Holy Innocents in East Flatbush is planning Three Nights of Prayer in honor of the centenary of Our Lady of Fatima’s apparitions, May 11 and 12 at 7 p.m., and May 13 at 5 p.m.

Join parishioners of St. Mark Church in Sheepshead Bay for an outdoor Rosary Rally, May 13 at 12 p.m. in front of the school gym.

In Jackson Heights, Our Lady of Fatima parish will host two days of celebrations, May 12-13, in honor of the parish patroness.
May 12: Auxiliary Bishop Witold Mroziewski will join the festivities starting at 1 p.m. with a reenactment of the apparitions performed by the school children, followed by exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and the recitation of the Rosary.
May 13: Activities begin with 8:30 a.m. Mass followed by exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, a rosary procession in the neighborhood, confession, prayer and silent meditation. Auxiliary Bishop Paul Sanchez will bless a new statue and celebrate 5 p.m. Mass.

St. Athanasius Church in Bensonhurst will have a Processional Vigil Mass in Honor of Our Lady of Fatima on May 13 at 5:30 p.m.

A public Rosary Rally to mark the anniversary of the apparitions will be held May 13 at 12 p.m. near the flagpole in Juniper Park, Middle Village. For details, call Annette, 718-651-4629.

A novena will begin the Fatima observance at St. Pius V, Jamaica, May 5 at 7 p.m. Auxiliary Bishop Octavio Cisneros will preside May 12 at a 7:30 p.m. Mass in Portuguese followed by a procession. On May 13, there will be a 6 p.m. trilingual Mass and coronation of the Virgin. Fatima festivities continue May 20 at 8 p.m. with traditional Portuguese food, barbecue and music by Ceu Azul. Editor’s Note: A plenary indulgence will be granted (under the usual conditions) to all who make a pilgrimage to the shrine in Fatima, Portugal; or participate in prayer in honor of the Virgin Mary before an image of Our Lady of Fatima displayed for public veneration on the anniversary of the apparitions.
