Thanks for a Needed Spotlight on Animal Suffering

Dear Editor: Fantastic article and much-needed coverage on the plight of factory-farmed animals (“Former Brooklynite Brings Catholic Teaching to Animal Protection Effort,” Oct. 3).

Thank you to Kristin Dunn and the St. Francis Institute for Animals for their work in creating awareness, and to Bill Miller for covering their important work. We need to make the connection that animals that end up on our plates suffer greatly.

Bravo!

Welcome Back Father Lauder

Dear Editor: I attended Father Lauder’s philosophy classes at Cathedral College in the late ’ 60s/early ’ 70s. His classes stimulated my mind back then, which was beneficial as a college student, as they do today through his Tablet columns.

It is good to have him back (“Experience Opens Eyes to Faith’s Deeper View,” Oct. 10), as well as his insights contained in his weekly columns.

Remembering Bishop Boardman’s Funeral

Dear Editor: The article on Oct. 3 (“A Brooklyn Bond With Blessed Fulton Sheen”) stated that the funeral Mass for Bishop John Boardman was at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Basilica.

I did the first reading at the funeral Mass, but it was at Our Lady of Angels Church in Bay Ridge, following his wake at the rectory dining room — his favorite room, as Msgr. Peter Altman commented in jest.

Not a “Bishops” girl (TMLA ’73), but have a good number of friends who were in last few classes (“Bishop McDonnell Students Return to Celebrate 100 Years of Memories,” Oct. 3). And a maternal aunt who was in one of the first classes.

Brooklyn Prep, the Jesuit high school in Brooklyn for men, was a short walk from “Bishops” (“Bishop McDonnell Students Return to Celebrate 100 Years of Memories,” Oct. 3).

In 1963, the Prep’s drama club was invited to stage their annual Shakespeare play (“Twelfth Night,” that year) in the “Bishops” auditorium, quite a step up from our stage at the end of our gymnasium! Thank you, “Bishops!”

The Prep, which opened in 1908, closed in 1972 (a victim of the financial burden imposed by a major renovation which coincided with a loss of Jesuit faculty), just a year before “Bishops” closed. The Brooklyn Prep Alumni Association continues to meet and fundraise each year, and the proceeds provide scholarships to Jesuit schools along the East Coast. (Class of ’66)
