Practicing and Speaking About Journalism

Dear Editor: In my present work, I wear two hats related to journalism. One is as a freelance contributor to The Tablet. The other is as an associate professor and director of the journalism program at St. John’s University.

In that latter role, I am honored to be asked to contribute to Currents News on NET-TV to speak about journalism. Appearing on Currents is a chance for me to provide a Catholic perspective on the news reporting that affects our lives. Thank you for that opportunity.

I believe it gives the audience a different and valuable perspective than what is often found in the secular media. I hope the viewers of Currents News agree.

Praise for Kenny Hogan

Dear Editor: Regarding the Up Front and Personal column (“My Inspirational Queens Pilgrimage,” Oct. 12) by Kenny Hogan, I commend him for his three-year perseverance in visiting the many parishes in Queens.

Before COVID-19, I did a lot of “church hopping,” but only in my neighborhood. It began back in 2002 when my mom was still with me.

I always try to begin my day with Mass to thank God for my many blessings. Back then, I chose the 6:30 a.m. Mass at St. Thomas Aquinas because I had to be home for the aid who came to care for my mother.

When they discontinued that Mass, I attended the 7 a.m. Mass at Good Shepherd.

After mom passed, I began attending the 8 a.m. Mass at Mary Queen of Heaven. After the pandemic came, I was forced to watch Mass on television. EWTN and NET-TV were a Godsend during that time.

The only thing missing was physically receiving Jesus in the Eucharist. When churches began re-opening their doors, I decided to stay put in my parish of St. Bernard Clairvaux, where I now attend the 8:30 a.m. Mass every day.

When I travel with my family, my children know the first questions I ask are: Where is the church, and what time is Sunday Mass?

I also have a collection of bulletins from the many churches I have visited in my lifetime. My journey has taken a lifetime. God Bless.

An Enlightening Veterans Day Article

Dear Editor: The Tablet’s Veterans Day article about Mr. George Cerrito (“Veteran’s Family Feels Joy After Missing Purple Heart Returned,” Nov. 9) was so appropriate.

It is amazing how God can bring this edifying story to us so many years later and remind us to smile and accept our limitations.

Having served in the 11th Armored Division in Vietnam in 1969 as a finance clerk, it struck a personal note.

Thank You, Currents News

Dear Editor: I want to thank Currents News and Jessica Easthope for their interest in the story of my son, Noah.

Our journey hasn’t been easy, and thanks to you, I have a platform to speak about it and bring awareness to his story, which is something most news organizations won’t cover.

You guys are a blessing in the sky, and I am truly grateful for your coverage. You are helping me save lives and also touch lives.
