Interesting Article on Priest Vestments

Dear Editor: I wish to thank you for the article you wrote regarding vestments (“The Meaning Behind Vestments: Clothes May Make the Man, But Vestments Carry a Deeper Explanation for Priests,” April 18).

It was very interesting and informative. I have collected several of them to give to my altar servers.

May I ask that in the future, there would be other articles that would highlight the sacred vessels and the various altar linens used in the Mass?

Also, the same articles could be written for children at an easier reading level.

Again, thanks for this article and the other articles that you have written in The Tablet.

Witnessing the Catholic Surge in Lower Manhattan

Dear Editor: I work close to St. Joseph’s Church and have chatted to some people. The Sunday, 6 p.m., Mass has around 1,000 people spilling out onto the streets (“Young Adults at NYU Fueling a Rapid Growth of Faith in Greenwich Village,” May 23).

Eighty percent of attendees are under 40 years old. It takes 20-30 minutes to exit as parishioners greet the priest. The “after party” in the basement is shoulder to shoulder packed.

It’s a phenomenon unseen for decades.

Celebrating The Artistic Style of John McAlinden

Dear Editor: My aunt, Virginia Owens, was the executive secretary for (longtime editor of The Tablet) Donald Zirkel for many years. One of my favorite features of The Tablet was at Christmas time.

They made a Christmas-themed poster using the names of people who belonged to various parishes in the Diocese of Brooklyn (“A Century of Faith, a Lifetime of Devotion: Brooklyn Church Set To Honor ‘Mr. Mac, ’ ” May 23).

My name was featured every year along with my brothers, Tom and Edward. I loved scrutinizing the page very carefully to find the names of the people I knew.

The Importance of Faith in College Life

Dear Editor: I wish it were like this when I was in college (“Young Adults at NYU Fueling a Rapid Growth of Faith in Greenwich Village,” May 23).

Take it from somebody who graduated from college and is now married and a mother, these are very important years of
your life.

If I could go back, I would go to confession more and spend more time with a spiritual director.
