Letters to the Editor

Letters to the Editor Week of December 7, 2024

Thank You to The Tablet and Currents News

Dear Editor: I want to take this opportunity to thank Currents News and The Tablet for its consistent support of St. John’s Bread and Life on air and in print. Thanks to both media properties, we can tell our story and the plight of the hungry right here in our own communities.

I want to commend Jessica Easthope, Paula Katinas, and all who play a part in helping us tell our story to a broader audience. You do an amazing job. Their reporting gives the community a hands-on view of what goes on each day and how we are working to ensure that no one goes hungry.

We remain grateful to all our supporters and those who join us in our mission to serve those in greatest need.

Sister Caroline Tweedy, RSM

Bedford Stuyvesant

Editor’s note: The author is Executive Director of St. John’s Bread & Life.

Blessed Carlo Acutis’ Relic

Dear Editor: Thank you for the article on Margaret Driscoll- Cheah (Cancer Survivor Finds Hope, Healing Through Blessed Carlo Acutis’ Relic, Nov. 23) and the blessing she received through the intercession of Blessed Carlo.

Margaret visited the church more than a year ago. While she was here she prayed with the relic and I prayed with her and blessed her with the relic. Last week, one of Margaret’s friends, who is the niece of Msgr. Phil Reilly, came to touch a huge stack of holy cards to the relic.

Please stay tuned for the announcement of the date of the blessing and dedication of the Diocesan Shrine of Blessed Carlo Acutis at Sacred Heart of Jesus in Bayside.

Msgr. Thomas C. Machalski, Jr.
Bayside

Editor’s note: The author is Pastor of Sacred Heart of Jesus Church and Custodian of the diocesan relic of Blessed Carlo Acutis.

A New Beginning in Williamsburg

Dear Editor: Transfiguration parish in Williamsburg has a solid reputation as a parish committed to social justice and truly living out the Gospel message through its work with those groups who are the most marginalized by society.

Due to the work of the late Msgr. Bryan Karvelis and the Sisters of St. Joseph, namely the late Sister Kathryn Margaret (Peggy) Walsh and Sister MaryAnne (Marcellus) Ricioppo, the parish is a place where everyone is accepted and everyone belongs.

Parishioners continue to carry on the legacy by doing ordinary things with extraordinary love.

This has resulted in continued parish growth and a visible proclamation of the Kingdom of God in this section of Williamsburg.

To be a part of Transfiguration is to truly live out and experience the love and presence of God on a daily basis. The addition of the Daughters of the Altagracia (Transfiguration Welcomes Three New Sisters to Its Community, Nov.30) begins a new era in the life of the parish.

However, I am certain that their presence will continue to enhance the life of this beautiful community of faith and that they, too, will continue to bring people closer to God. May God use them according to His will so that they can support us and help bring the parish forward as we journey together to the house of our Heavenly Father.
