Remembering Sister Evelyn Joyce Smith

Dear Editor: Reading the obituary of Sister Evelyn Joyce Smith (Nov. 16), I cannot help but think of the debt we all, yes indeed, owe the Sisters of St. Joseph. That includes the state and the
nation. Of course, I would be totally remiss if I did not include my wife, Anne, a graduate of St. Joseph.

America is the poorer for the passing of Sister Evelyn and her fellow sisters. Deo Gratias.

A Letter to God

Dear Editor: Dear God, a few weeks ago, I wrote you a letter asking why there is still war, hunger, and destruction in the world.

I thought that I could get you to make some changes, but evidently, you have a plan that I don’t understand. So I ask you: What good is served by babies starving to death? Or being crushed in the rubble or shot on purpose?

What good is served by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, leaving the country in ruins and still fighting courageously?

What good is served when one Christian is killing another? Or when one child of Abraham kills another the way Cain killed Abel?

What good is served when convoys of food are prevented from making life-saving deliveries?

You told Saint Faustina to trust in you; many of us do trust in you, but sometimes it gets more and more difficult as the days go on, and the wars and killing continue, and only your intervention can stop the madness.

I don’t expect a written answer to my questions, but since actions speak louder than words, please speak about actions of peace.

Tribute to Lou Carnesecca

Dear Editor: Before each CYO game, the teams line up, say the CYO prayer, and shake hands.

At our most recent Friday game at St. Andrew Avellino against St. Robert Bellarmine in Bayside, we asked for a moment of silence for Coach Lou Carnesecca. After it was done, the crowd gave Louie a nice round of applause. I was pleasantly surprised.

The kids had no idea who Coach Lou was, but the parents and grandparents did.

Over the years, Lou did free coaching clinics for CYO volunteer coaches. He was a great man.

‘Countdown to Notre Dame’ Currents News Special

Dear Editor: What an informative Currents News Special Report about the reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral. I was struck by the sheer professionalism of the program and felt that it could have been broadcast on network TV. In fact, it was better than any similar programs I’ve seen recently on the major networks.

The reporting was top-notch and anchorperson Christine Persichette perfectly covered the timeline of reports from Notre Dame’s fire and roof collapse in 2019 to its reconstruction and
reopening. Thank you, Currents News, for your always-outstanding coverage of major events.

I would love to see more special programs like this one.
