Bishop Kearney H.S., Bensonhurst, inducted 195 students into the Mater Dei Chapter of the National Honor Society.
Eighty-two seniors received permanent membership, and 67 juniors and 46 sophomores were granted one-year provisional membership during a solemn ceremony. Sister Thomasine Stagnitta, C.S.J., principal, presented each girl with her membership card. She in turn received a rose from Assistant Principal Geri Martinez, moderator of the chapter.
Martinez installed the senior officers: Rebecca Tom, who spoke of scholarship, urging the girls to use their talents to make a difference; Lisa Esposito, who stressed the notion that a good leader must be a good listener; Billie Wei, who said that character is a multi-faceted part of each person and is a work in progress; and Alessia Giarracca, who reminded everyone that when we bend down to serve someone in need, we stand taller ourselves.
The ceremony ended with a personal reflection from Sharon Keller, a member of Kearney’s guidance department. She thanked the parents and guardians for their support and commended them for having encouraged their daughters to do their best.
“Life will not always be easy,” she told the students. “In the hard times, rely on the support of your friends and use your intelligence to get you through. I hope you always keep the youthful enthusiasm you had as freshmen.”
