One hundred and nine students from Catholic schools in Brooklyn and Queens were honored at the Tri-State Italian American Congress Scholarship Awards ceremony Feb. 27 at St. James Cathedral-Basilica, Downtown Brooklyn. Auxiliary Bishop James Massa presided as the awards were presented.
“These families are very dedicated in giving their children a Catholic education and every bit helps them pursue that,” said Michelle Fox, associate director of Futures in Education. “This opportunity allows them to stay in Catholic schools, continue their education and be proud of the work they are doing.
“Catholic education is teaching the whole person and adds such great values. It’s so great to see them all here.”
Msgr. Jamie Gigantiello, diocesan director for development, addressed the students on their gifts. He asked them where do gifts come from and what do we do with them?
After some responded Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny, the students finally answered from God and from their parents. Msgr. Gigantiello reminded them to be thankful to those that give gifts.
“The main use of gifts is to bring joy and happiness to those receiving them,” he explained. “We also need to recognize the gifts God has given us. God gave you the gifts of life, faith, and family and friends that love you. God loves each and every one of us and gives us all gifts to use for our own happiness, but also so that others can see God loves us.
“The way we say thank you to God is to share our gifts with other people and that is what I want all of you to do, share your gifts.”
