Holy Cross High School Starts the New Year with the Holy Trinity

Holy Cross H.S., Flushing, celebrated the start of the 2012-2013 school year with a Mass of the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Cross community including the student body, alumni, parents, faculty and friends came together to ask the Holy Spirit for a fruitful school year.

In his homily, Father Walter Jenkins, C.S.C., president, spoke about the importance of symbols. He said people often times collect objects because they are representative, hold special meaning or have personal value. In the same way, he said, Christians recognize the symbol of the Cross.

“The Cross seems such a strange thing: an instrument of death to hold up,” he said. “But it’s not about the physical Cross. It’s about our relationship with God, who loved us, who took our pain and our burden.

“We celebrate that today — a symbol that stands for God’s great love for us. He gave us His only son, and that’s what the Cross reminds us of,” he said.

He then urged students to reflect the love of God to one another and become symbols of God’s love themselves.

“Remember what the symbol of the Cross is, and carry that as Holy Cross men forever,” he said.

Following the liturgy, new officers of the student council were presented to the assembly and officially installed.

“May their leadership reflect the light of Jesus Christ,” Father Jenkins proclaimed.
