The philosophy at Holy Angels Catholic Academy, Bay Ridge is simple — to be a place where inquisitive minds grow and faith is nurtured.
The program follows New York State and Diocese of Brooklyn guidelines. Students are instructed in the Common Core curriculum, including religion, math, social studies, language arts and science. Students are also educated in computer technology and foreign language using the Rosetta Stone web-based program. Starting in grade five, students are involved in the Duns Scotus program, an enrichment honors program. Young students are introduced to reading and language with the Superkids Reading Program. This phonetic-based reading program is validated through research to be the most effective way to teach children to read.
Students’ creativity is unleashed and inspired through an appreciation of the arts, music and dance. Students are also fortunate enough to enjoy after school clubs, such as dance, glee club, keyboarding and the ever-so-popular Lego Club. At Holy Angels the learning and fun go well beyond the 3 p.m. dismissal bell.
The physical plant boasts two gymnasiums, an auditorium with a stage, a beautifully designed air-conditioned cafeteria, schoolyard and an early childhood motor skills center.
The academy believes strongly in providing administrators, teachers and students with the tools they need to strive for excellence. The highly professional staff of educators has a combined experience of over 200 years of teaching and is constantly keeping up with the latest trends and advancements in education through professional development opportunities. The principal and board of directors, through collaboration with St. John’s University, are trained in academy methodology to ensure that the academy remains on the cutting edge of the academy model of education. The academy has also just forged a partnership with St. Francis College. Holy Angels enjoys the benefit of a prestigious group of business and community leaders to govern as the academy’s board of directors.
The academy has a full-day nursery and Pre-K program. Students in these grades have the opportunity to visit the Early Childhood Motor Skills Center on a regular basis. The academy now boasts a technology center with 20 computers, an iPad cart and SMART Boards in all classrooms.
