Dear Editor: Perhaps I am becoming a bit prudish in my old age, but I just read that the theme for the 2018 Met Gala is “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.” The article said there would be clothing on display from the Sistine Chapel and the event was meant to draw attention to the religious works at the Met.
I am finding myself a little disturbed by the concept. While I have seen some people wearing some beautiful and elegant dresses to this event, I have also seen some crazy, if not offensive, styles worn by some of the younger celebrities that supposedly embraced the “theme” of the evening. I think putting Heavenly Bodies and “Catholic Imagination” together may well open the door to some pretty offensive things. I am a little surprised that The Vatican would participate since this is not a “religious” event and the “potential” for disrespect is considerable.
I may be misreading this whole thing, but I would think this theme would make any Catholic pause for a moment, maybe even raise an eyebrow.
Any thoughts from the readers?
