Letters to the Editor

Growing Up Catholic

Dear Editor: Much thanks for the publication of my article, “Parish of His Youth Imbued an Irish Spirit” (Up Front and Personal, March 14). Also, much thanks for your great review (The Editor’s Space, Oct. 4, 2014) of my cousin Vincent Manago’s book on St. Lucy’s parish experience (“The Third Attic and Other Brooklyn Stories”).

My father was a devoted volunteer for the Pallottine Sisters of the historic St. Thomas Settlement on Kent Ave., having served as Committee Chairman for the annual bazaar there during the 1960s.  From St. Lucy’s to the Anthony V. Manago American Legion Post (my uncle Anthony was killed in action at Iwo Jima, 1945) to St. Patrick’s, I would have to humbly affirm that the Manago family has had a significant place on Kent Ave. My aunt, Mary Manago Somma, worked for the Franciscan Brothers of Brooklyn at St. Patrick’s School, and St. Francis Prep in Williamsburg.

As my cousin Vincent said in his book, our values centered upon the Catholic faith, family and friends. And we owe all our accomplishments to the ministries of the Roman Catholic Church parishes on Kent Ave. Two parishes, of two cultures (Irish and Italian), living one faith united to glorify God in the unity of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

This is the story of the grace of faith, hard work and the glory of God. I pray this family story inspires people to trust in God and obey the Church in their lives.
