Stopping the Decline

Dear Editor: George Weigel’s column on decline of European Christianity (Feb. 28) was thought-provoking.

It is undeniable that European civilization and achievement were orchestrated by the foundations laid by the medieval church through its numerous centers of learning.

The Europeans virtually ruled the world. This achievement later gave way to opulence, irreligion and neglect of moral spiritual values. The Western Church joined the bandwagon, shifting emphases to elitism, corruption and outright rebuttal of some solid doctrines of our faith.

As Weigel opined in previous articles, you cannot replace something with nothing! The Euro church allowed its salt to be trampled and hid its light under a bushel under cover of liberalism. For instance, gay culture, divorce, pro-choice, single parenthood, abortion-on-demand, financial misuse, pedophilia, sex abuse, etc., became common vices in some churches. With such decadence, churches continually are deserted and closed down, while minarets are quickly being erected.

Here in the U.S., Sundays are popularly craved for sporting and shopping while the mushrooming mosques are filled in Fridays with their adherents.

We must heed the warning to the Laodicean Christians (Rev 3:15) who God warned He would desert because of His lukewarmness. Let’s stop putting on the cloak of religion yet deny its power.

We cannot stop the decline of Christianity by legislating against minarets and their adherents as some Europeans are attempting. The solution: a metanoia stemming from genuine mea culpa and a return to authentic Christian missionary zeal!
