Maureen McCormack, a second-generation Irish-American, is receiving the Kathleen Slattery Woman of the Year Award.
Her grandparents emigrated from Ballymote, County Sligo, and Swinford, County Mayo.
Born in Brooklyn to Martin and Edith Black, she grew up in Holy Innocents, Flatbush, and attended the parish school.
She graduated from Mercy Juniorate H.S., Fort Greene, and St. Francis College, Brooklyn Heights
A former Sister of Mercy, she taught in Catholic elementary schools for 25 years. She spent time teaching in Sacred Heart, Fort Greene; St. Thomas Aquinas, Flatlands; St. Therese of Lisieux, East Flatbush; St. Edmund, Homecrest; and her home parish of St. Rose of Lima, Parkville.
She currently works as the benefits manager for the Sisters of Mercy at their Motherhouse in Clinton Hill/Fort Greene and ensures that the sisters across several states have the services and support they need.
For the last decade, she has been the local coordinator for ABC Quilts, a program that makes and distributes quilts to hospitals and centers across the five boroughs for at-risk babies. She has delivered close to 300,000 handmade quilts to area hospitals.
Generous with her time and talent, she has made Irish dance dresses for local dance schools, including the Maureen O’Malley School of Dance, for many years.
For more than 15 years, she assisted the Vincentian Renewal Team, headed by the late Father Tom Krafinski, with parish-based spiritual renewals in the Brooklyn and Rockville Centre dioceses.
McCormack was also proud to serve on the ministry team for the Brooklyn Diocesan Synod.
She presently serves as a parish council member and lector in St. Rose of Lima parish, Parkville.
McCormack and her husband Thomas, a native of Killeshandra, County Cavan, recently marked 41 years of marriage. They have seven children, Patricia, James, Brendan, Maura, John, Brian and Timothy, and nine grandchildren.
