Dear Editor: Some time ago, when someone unintentionally said something ethnically offensive, I wasn’t sure how to explain why it was offensive.  I later decided that, if you are not sure what you said (or are thinking of saying) might offend someone from a particular ethnic group, simply fill in the name of your own group instead and see how it sounds to you then.  I bet it works every time.
