Deacon John P. Orlandello, 73, who was ministering at Divine Mercy parish, Williamsburg, died Nov. 27 at SS. Joachim and Anne Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Coney Island.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated Dec. 2 at St. Francis of Paola Church, a worship site of Divine Mercy parish.
Auxiliary Bishop Paul Sanchez was the main celebrant of the funeral Mass. Msgr. Joseph Calise preached the homily.
Deacon Orlandello was ordained as a deacon on May 16, 1998 and assigned to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Williamsburg.
Born in Brooklyn, he grew up in St. Francis of Paola parish. He moved to Our Lady of Mt. Carmel about six years ago. There he was involved with working at local food shelters, helping run food drives, held luncheons for the poor especially during the holidays and visited nursing homes regularly.
“Deacon John had a wonderful sense of being able to reach people in need,” said Msgr. Calise, former pastor at Mt. Carmel.
“He had a big personality and loved to talk and debate theology and politics. He was opinionated, but understanding. He was a hard worker and had a great understanding of what it took to be a deacon. He dedicated himself to a true life of service.”
Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Woodside.
