Father Suran Ministered For 68 Years as a Priest

Father Suran

A Mass of Christian burial for Father Joaquin Suran, a retired priest of the Brooklyn Diocese, was celebrated Dec. 6 at St. Leo’s Church, Corona. He died Dec. 4 in North Shore Hospital, Manhasset, L.I. He was 95.

Born in Istria, Italy, Father Suran attended Colegio San Pedro in Argentina; Sherbrooke University, Canada; Teachers’ College, Colombia University; and Instituto Villada, Cordoba, Argentina.

He was ordained in Argentina for the Salesians of Don Bosco on Nov. 11, 1949. He was incardinated as a priest of the Brooklyn diocese in 1986.

He served here at St. Anthony-St. Alphonsus, Greenpoint, 1982-85; Our Lady of the Angelus, Rego Park, 1985-86; Blessed Sacrament, Cypress Hills, 1986-89; St. Paul the Apostle, Corona, 1989-2000; and St. Leo’s, 2000-07.

He retired in 2007 and remained at St. Leo’s until moving to a private residence in New Jersey in 2011.

Burial was in St. John’s Cemetery, Middle Village.
