Deacon Barahona

A Mass of Christian Burial for Deacon Manuel S. Barahona, assistant director of the Cursillo Movement, was celebrated March 3 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Astoria. He died Feb. 27 in the Haven Hospice at Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan. He was 69.

Auxiliary Bishop Raymond Chappetto was the main celebrant of the funeral Mass. Msgr. Perfecto Vazquez was the homilist.

A native of Nicaragua, Deacon Barahona worked as an accountant before his ordination as a deacon on May 26, 2007 at Immaculate Conception Monastery Church, Jamaica.

Deacon Barahona was an intricate part of Our Lady of Mount Carmel as he performed many baptisms in both English and Spanish. He hosted a Holy Hour every month at Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Deacon Ramon Lima preached at the wake where over 1,000 people attended.

Msgr. Sean Ogle, pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, remembered his friend, “I have known him for as long as I have been pastor here, so over nine years. He was involved in everything and was a pleasure to work with.

“Deacon Barahona was everything a pastor would want in a deacon. He was bright, humble, a great preacher, hard worker, and he related to people magnificently,” he said.

He is survived by his wife, Consuelo of Jamaica and son, Manuel.

Burial was in Fresh Pond Crematory.
