Christ ~ Academics ~ Community
St. Mel’s Catholic Academy enjoys a legacy of excellence, serving the Flushing, Whitestone, College Point and Bayside areas since 1960.
St. Mel’s offers free, full-day Pre-K for All; early childhood programs for children, ages six months to three years old, including Mommy and Me, Toddler Time and Nursery; and education through eighth grade.
The academy’s mission is to foster the spiritual, social, emotional and academic growth of students in a nurturing Christ-centered environment. St. Mel’s promotes a strong Catholic identity in children, emphasizing core values such as kindness, integrity and respect to guide these future leaders of tomorrow.
Academics and Extracurriculars
Students develop a strong foundation of excellence through comprehensive academic and extracurricular programs. The academy offers Spanish, art, music and religious studies, with additional math instruction after school to prepare students for the TACHS and NYS exams.
Graduates are consistently accepted into highly competitive, specialized high school programs in New York City, and consistently receive full and partial scholarships to Catholic high schools.
St. Mel’s teams have achieved championships in baseball, soccer, volleyball and basketball. Most recently, the eighth-grade girls won the 2017 diocesan CYO soccer championship. Other programs include Girl Scouts, photography club, fitness and yoga, student council, yearbook and youth ministry. St. Mel’s also offers the St. Thomas Aquinas Society and launched a new Oratorical Club last fall; both are gifted/enrichment programs.
Technology and Innovation
As the first elementary school in the Diocese of Brooklyn to offer a 1:1 take home Chromebook for each child, St. Mel’s has a strong reputation for technology and innovation. WiFi is available throughout the school, SMART Boards are in every classroom, and there are iPads and laptops in the computer lab.
The school’s state-of-the-art STEM Lab features a 3D printer and 50-inch televisions for mirroring/projecting lessons from iPads and Chromebooks directly to the TVs. A Lego Enrichment Program focusing on engineering and creative thinking is also available.
