Local Mexicans Cheer Pope’s Visit to Homeland

Enthusiasm and hope are brimming among Mexican Catholics in Brooklyn and Queens over Pope Francis’ upcoming trip to their native country, Feb. 12-17. That faith and excitement will be palpable at St. Brigid Church in Bushwick this Saturday evening, Feb. 6, when Mexican Catholics in the diocese will hold a 7 p.m. Mass to pray for the Holy Father and his intentions in Mexico.

Lenten Regulations

The penitential and grace-filled season of Lent begins with the celebration of Ash Wednesday, which this year falls on Feb. 10. Particularly within the context of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, we are all called to use this holy season as a time of prayer, reflection and preparation to enter into the celebration of the central mysteries of our faith at Easter.

Mercy Is at the Heart of Evangelization Congress

During this Year of Mercy, Catholics have the opportunity to better understand the concept of mercy and to meet Jesus by performing the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. That was the message of the Diocesan Evangelization Congress held Saturday, Jan. 30, at the Immaculate Conception Pastoral Center, Douglaston.

NCCW Brooklyn Council’s Biennial Convention Set for Feb. 20

The Brooklyn Diocesan Council of the National Council of Catholic Women will host its biennial Communion Luncheon in celebration of the Jubilee Year of Mercy on Saturday, Feb. 20 at the Immaculate Conception Center, Douglaston.

Pro Vita Mass Rescheduled

Last weekend’s snowstorm wiped out the annual Pro Vita Awards Mass and ceremony at St. James Cathedral-Basilica in Downtown Brooklyn. Father Michael Gelfant, diocesan liaison to the Knights of Columbus, a co-sponsor of the event, announced that it has been rescheduled for March 5 at 5 p.m.

Campaign Comes to Parish Just In Time for Anniversary

Father Miroslaw Podymniak, O.F.M. Conv., known as “Father Mirek” to his parishioners, has been the pastor at St. Adalbert for the past year and half. He loves his parish community and is enjoying getting to know its members through his work on the Generations of Faith campaign.

Cathedral Club Ready for Dinner

The Cathedral Club of Brooklyn, which has been supporting the bishop’s charitable endeavors for more than 100 years will celebrate its 116th anniversary dinner at the New York Marriott Marquis in Manhattan on Thursday, Feb. 4, at 6 p.m.
