Calvary Hospital: Where Life Continues

Since its founding in 1899, the primary goal at Calvary Hospital is meeting the physical, psychological and spiritual needs of patients and their families. As the nation’s only fully accredited acute-care specialty hospital devoted to providing palliative care to adult advanced cancer patients, Calvary is unmatched in its organization of care and depth of expertise.
Each year, Calvary provides more than 6,000 patients, families and friends with inpatient and outpatient care, home care, hospice, nursing home hospice, care of complex wounds, and extensive support programs for patients, families and friends. Inpatients receive care at its 200-bed Bronx campus and 25-bed Brooklyn satellite at Lutheran Medical Center, Sunset Park – the first “hospital within a hospital” in New York state.

Expert Care at Home
Calvary’s array of supportive outreach, psychological and spiritual services are known as “palliative care.”
Inpatients receive expert pain and symptom management from a multidisciplinary team. Patients whose symptoms are more stabilized may choose to receive the same level of expert care in the home setting.
Under its Calvary@Home program, comprehensive care is provided to patients who are suffering from advanced cancer or other chronic and acute terminal illnesses at home.
Calvary offers home care in the Bronx, Queens, Manhattan and lower Westchester, and hospice services in the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, Nassau, Westchester and Rockland counties. It offers hospice services in more than 30 nursing homes in Brooklyn (including SS. Joachim and Anne Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Coney Island), Manhattan, the Bronx, and Westchester, Rockland and Nassau counties. More than 90 percent of Calvary’s home hospice patients are able to spend their last days at home. If needed, Calvary@Home can facilitate a seamless transition to becoming an inpatient at its Bronx or Brooklyn sites.
Calvary additionally offers free bereavement support groups in Downtown Brooklyn, and a free summer day camp in Manhattan Beach for children who have lost loved ones.
