The Nerd Herd, the robotics team from St. Edmund Prep, Sheepshead Bay, can’t wait to showcase their work this year.

Composed mainly of seniors, it is their last chance to expand the program, Teach Gracious Professionalism, and hopefully participate in as many competitions as possible.

Last year, the FIRST Tech Challenge rookie team spent most of the year learning the basics and overcoming technical challenges.

This year, they are able to share their knowledge and mentor others through their new club, the STEM Robotics club. Those students interested in exploring, building, programming or who just like watching their robot in action are welcome to join the team.

Hopefully, the program will continue to grow with these new club members, and will become integrated in the school’s everyday curriculum.

It is important that the Nerd Herd have ownership of their team, which is why they are committed to personally raising the funds necessary for the program.

This year, the team sold gourmet lollipops, applied for grants and held its second annual Fashion Show on Nov. 1, 2013.

Student supporters of the robotics team, along with three team members, walked the runway, showcasing formal wear donated by Doris Fashions and Classie Tuxedo.

In addition, local companies such as Bruno Salon and Spa, Faces Salon, Ace Luggage, 18 Floral Events and Perfect Entertainment provided raffles and entertainment for family, faculty, administration and friends.

This event procured the necessary funding needed for most of the team’s expenses. The ALCOA Foundation also provided a generous grant for the year’s registration fees.

The St. Edmund Prep Nerd Herd will be participating in local scrimmages.

“The team members continue to work diligently week after week,” said Erica Barbieri, club moderator and science teacher. “We are optimistic for this year’s outcome.”
