The Fontbonne Hall Academy, Bay Ridge, varsity softball team swept St. Francis Prep, Fresh Meadows, by scores of 3-1 and 6-4 on May 21 to capture the Brooklyn/Queens GCHSAA ‘AA’ Championship.
The Bonnies dropped the first game of the series to the L’il Terriers in nine innings the day before but fought back to take both game the next day for the championship win.
Junior pitcher Nicolette Trapani threw both games of the doubleheader for Fontbonne. She only surrendered one earned run in the Game 1, which allowed her teammate junior catcher Maria Serrantino to hit the go-ahead home run in third inning.
The Bonnies did not wait around to score in Game 2, as three first-inning runs set the tone. But the L’il Terriers hung around and eventually got to Trapani in the fifth inning, tying the game at four.
Leading off the bottom of the seventh, junior Christina Calascione singled to right field, bringing up Serrantino. Serrantino crushed a 1-0 pitch for a home run to left center field, giving Fontbonne the win.
The Bonnies will play in the GCHSAA state championship May 29 at Queens College.
